Eighteen percent of people who date online say they have been an target of a scam, finds an AARP commissioned report.
Among those in that group, 38 percent were in the 50-plus age range while 62 percent were 18 to 49. But, the study did find older adults are using online dating services at a much lower rate than those 18 to 49 years of age.
The survey found the victims tended to have experienced a stressful life event such as a divorce or financial issue, victims tended to be keep quiet about what happened to them.
Men were more likely than women to be targets or victims by a 54 to 46 percent margin.
