In order to rank the places, Smartasset looked at retirement income, food stamp reliance for seniors, the poverty rate for seniors, the homeownership rate for seniors, the percent of seniors with retirement income, the housing-cost-burdened rate for seniors and housing costs as a percent of retirement income.
Arizona has three different cities on the list, more than any other state. Large cities scored poorly on the list. The top 10 cities are, starting from number 10 are Colorado Springs, Colorado; Virginia Beach, Virginia; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Lexington, Kentucky; Mesa, Arizona; Anchorage, Alaska; Sun City, Arizona; Surprise, Arizona; Huntsville, Alabama, and the city where seniors are most financially prepared is The Villages, Florida.
